First Aid Tutorial
The following first aid tutorial was graciously provided by Remo P.J. Tilanus, an astronomer working in Hawaii. Captain Dave extends his thanks and encourages those with an interest in Hawaii or the stars to visit Remo's site.
Please note that while this guide will not turn you into a surgeon or even an EMT. It is not intended as a field guide to keep your family healthy when the world as we know it comes to an end. If you are the first to respond to an injury, it is our hope that this guide will have provided you with the basic information necessary to react properly and do more good than harm.
If the topic proves to be of interest, we encourage you to take a local CPR and first aid course or EMT training. Medical skills, from setting a broken bone to treating shock or poisoning to delivering babies, should be desireable skills in a survival situation.
DISCLAIMER: Under no conditions responsibility is be accepted by the author, Captain Dave, Captain Dave Inc. or anyone else related to this site regarding the consequences of use of the information disctributed in this documentation in any First Aid application.
THIS IS A TUTORIAL, HENCE A STUDY AID, NOT A FIRST AID MANUAL.
Introduction
This tutorial has been prepared by a Certified First Aid Instructor with many years experience teaching first aid, CPR and basic life support courses. While the material presented conforms to commonly accepted standards, it is not intended to substitute for formalized classroom instruction in first aid, as offered by many community groups and organizations. Nor should this tutorial be relied upon for use at the time of an emergency. The time to learn first aid is BEFORE you need to use it! (The survivalist's creed -- ed note.)
Each year 64 million Americans sustain injuries that require medical attention or restrict their activities for more than half-a-day! The material in this tutorial could save the life of someone dear to you! We suggest you peruse the material to get an overview of the various areas covered, then spend time reviewing each topic in detail.
Since you will probably use the skills presented on this tutorial only from time to time, it is a good idea to review its content every so often so you don't forget the valuable lessons.
It is also strongly recommended you sign up for an inclusive first aid and CPR course.
Your comments and suggestions regarding this tutorial are invited.
