America Wakes Up

I don't know whether it was Powell's speech at the UN or moving to Condition Orange - high risk of terrorist attack - but something has spooked people. Over the last four or five days, orders have quadrupled here at Captain Dave's and web site hits have more than doubled. We're shipping gas masks as fast as we can pack them in boxes, and the UPS man is in for a big surprise when he shows up Monday night.

I'm glad America is waking up, and I'm pleased we can help people with information and products. But let's face it folks, where have you been before now? 9/11 was almost a year and a half ago - the threat of increased terrorism has been with us since then. The war with Iraq has been brewing since late summer, and things started heating up with North Korea in October. The smart people have their gas masks already, their potassium iodate and a closet or basement full of food. Now you're buying these things the day after the FBI and Department of Homeland Defense announce an increased threat level. While it's never too late, it's certainly better in a case like this to be too early.

Act Before it is Too Late

While we are on the subject of stocking up, here's another thing you should buy before it is too late: a battle rifle. If you already own a good semi-auto rifle in .223 or .308 or even 7.72 x 39, buy 500 or 1000 rounds of ammunition for it while you still can. Surplus ammo is available at dozens of web sites - just search it at any of the major search sites. Lay in a few high capacity magazines for your guns and some bandoleers with stripper clips as well.

Now, once you have all that ammo, go out and practice. Don't sit at the bench like a target shooter, get your belly down in the dirt -- go prone. For starters, to make sure you're sighted in and on paper, see if you can shoot a one-inch group at 25 yards. That's a great distance to practice at because you can see the bullet holes. Adjust your sites until you are on target, and then see how tight a group you can shoot at 100 yards. A new modern rifle should be under 2 inches, a scoped hunting rifle with decent ammo should be right around one inch. If you have a surplus rifle like an SKS, FAL or CETME with iron sights and are shooting surplus ammo, you should be able to stay under four inches. After you have mastered that, jump up to 200 yards, then 300, out as far as your range will allow. Write down your sight or scope setting for each, and tape them to your stock so you will know how many clicks to come up for 400 yards without counting on your memory.

Captain Dave's Standards are not that tough, but I bet you can't go out there and shoot the basic standard tomorrow, or at any time you care called to. Here it is:

Shoot a five shot group in less than 30 seconds at 100 yards. Your group should be on the center of target and:

- 1.5 inches or less with a scope
- 2 inches or less with a modern rifle and new ammo
- 4 inches or less with a surplus rifle and/or surplus ammo

Repeat this sitting and then standing.

Once you've mastered the basic standard, congratulate yourself. You are on your way to being able to protect yourself and your family, a man (or woman) to be respected. But you are not there yet. Increase your speed until you can fire 10 shots onto two different targets in 30 seconds, each group meeting the group size outlined above. Then repeat until you can shot four targets with five rounds each in 60 seconds, from each position. This is the advanced standard, and I bet it will take you hundreds of rounds to achieve success. Once you achieve success, you can be proud oof yourself, but to meet the standard, you have to be able to do it two times in a row.

If you can meet this standard, that means you can protect yourself and your family from whatever might be coming down the road. It means you can confidently hit a headshot at 100 yards, and a man-sized target out to 500, assuming you know your sight settings. It means you can confidently protect your family and your community if life as we know it falls apart - what survivalist call TEOTWAWKI - the end of the world as we know it.

But let's face it, while Captain Dave is no novice, he's not a real expert like Fred. If you want to be a true rifleman, go to his Website and order Fred's rifleman package - 10 sets of targets and his guide to being a rifleman. This is an excellent guide and will help turn any occasional shooter into a Rifleman. If you want some thought-provoking righting, ask for his columns as well. Fred can teach you a great deal about shooting, as well as protecting your rights, freedom and liberties. Remember, there are other threats than just terrorists. #
